Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador: China’s economy

Cambridge Judge Business School was delighted to welcome H.E. Ambassador Liu Xiaoming, Chinese Ambassador to the UK, on 22 February 2011.

On his first visit to Cambridge as Chinese Ambassador to the UK, Ambassador Liu came to the School to talk to students as part of the MBA Leadership Seminar Series. Ambassador Liu was accompanied on his visit to the School by Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

Ambassador Liu’s speech, entitled “The Road to Success and Comprehensive Development”, addressed several topics including:

  • The successful story of China’s development, leading to it being named last week as the world’s second largest economy
  • How soon will China overtake the US?
  • Can China sustain its fast growth after three decades, and what does China’s development mean to the world?

In a later interview, he told us that by 2015, China aims to be the world’s leading overseas investor. Chinese investors are looking for profitable markets, including the UK, where their interests focus on the infrastructure and service sectors, natural resources, manufacturing as well as banking and finance.
