Before beginning his PhD studies at Cambridge, Daniel Marshall served as a police officer with Durham Constabulary. He was touched by the number of young people he saw circling in and out of the criminal justice system, and he wanted to make a difference. That is why he decided to pursue a PhD in Criminology, which led him to co-found RISE Youth, a social enterprise providing free life coaching to young people leaving custody. TeamRISE won the 2011 Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) £5k challenge competition.

To raise money for RISE Youth’s pilot programme, Daniel stepped out of his academic comfort zone and trained hard in preparation for the April Milton Keynes Marathon. He successfully completed it in just 4 hours 16 minutes, despite adverse weather conditions.

Daniel knows first-hand the ripple effects on community safety and cohesion when a young person breaks the cycle of reoffending, and ventures out onto a new path of employment and education. This is an incredible opportunity to change a young person’s life, by investing in a programme that empowers marginalised young people with practical visions for the future.
