Chitra Ramkrishna, National Stock Exchange of India: A world-class and transparent institution

Themes: Diversity in business, Guest speakers, Leadership

In just under two decades Chitra Ramkrishna, MD & Chief Executive Officer of India’s National Stock Exchange (NSE), and her leadership team have transformed India’s securities markets and stock exchanges into a world-leading operation as the National Stock Exchange.

In an interview for Cambridge Judge Business School’s website she talked about the development of the Exchange as the first fully transparent, electronic, nationwide exchange, with real-time risk management and guaranteed settlements with short and certain settlement cycles.

Ms Ramkrishna had some key messages for her MBA audience at the latest Cambridge MBA Leadership seminar:

First and foremost failure is a part of your life which will move you in another direction. So don’t overlook that. Obvious choices are there for everyone to see but that can only give you so much growth. Last but not the least, always ask what it is that makes you come alive. Go and do that rather than worrying about what the world needs from you.”

She insisted that these intertwined principles had been applied in the development of the NSE:

The fact that we stuck with our convictions and not with obvious choices is what makes NSE the successful organisation that it is today. We are really a bunch of people who passionately enjoy what we are doing in creating this world-class institution. That’s what keeps us going rather than worrying about what the world expects us to do.”

Chitra Ramkrishna was recently ranked 17th in Fortune USA’s list of the worlds most powerful businesswomen. She has also been included in Business Today’s top 30 women achievers for the fourth successive year.
