Cambridge Judge MFin alumna fulfils her ambition to study in Cambridge and then secures a role at Barclays in London.

For Kenya native Yvonne Omenya, the Master of Finance (MFin) programme at Cambridge Judge Business School proved to be a key springboard from her prior career with a Kenyan sugar producer to a new career as an analyst at Barclays Capital in London.

Yvonne worked as a Projects and Fixed Assets Accountant for Mumias Sugar Company, Kenya’s leading sugar producer. She always dreamed to study in Cambridge, and in 2013 she was awarded the MFin Programme Scholarship allowing her to embark on the MFin at Cambridge Judge.

Through the School’s longstanding partnership with BNY Mellon, Yvonne undertook a summer internship as an investment analyst on the Emerging Markets desk for Newton Investment – part of BNY Mellon. She then went on to secure the post at Barclays.

“The MFin programme has been fundamental to my personal and professional development,” says Yvonne.

The teaching from Cambridge Judge finance practitioners and the academic rigour were key attractions for me. It gave me a platform to challenge myself beyond my comfort zone and interact with other intelligent and talented people.

Yvonne is part of a team that aims to make Barclays a more resilient Bank: the team is responsible for management of Barclay’s liquidity risk and formulating best-practice funding strategies that optimise the bank’s resources.

“As a post-experience programme, the MFin allowed me to meet people from different backgrounds and learn from them,” says Yvonne.

I came from an accounting background with a keen desire to learn from colleagues with a finance background. And at the end of it all, I have also made very good friends!
