A team of three students from the MBA programme at Cambridge Judge Business School placed second in the Wharton People Analytics Conference case competition at the University of Pennsylvania, winning a $3,000 prize for their use of “big data.”

The team was comprised of Cambridge MBA candidates Ben Carroll, Sam Verran and Siddharth Joshi.

Out of more than 100 teams, the Cambridge Judge team was one of only six teams invited to Philadelphia for the competition on 7 April, which was run in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières‎ (MSF), or Doctors Without Borders. The finalists were selected “based on the analytical rigor, actionability of insights, creativity and overall presentation of teams’ submissions.”

The submission by the Cambridge Judge team analysed data on more than 7,000 MSF volunteer deployments, to help MSF better allocate doctors to missions in order to improve the doctors’ experience and likelihood of going on further missions.

The analysis “showed that a number of factors, such as the match between a volunteer’s skillset and the required mission role, the length of a mission, and the number of missions a volunteer has completed, can be used to effectively match volunteers to deployment opportunities to increase retention with MSF,” the submission said.
