Tales on Moon Lane, a London children’s bookstore supported by Cambridge Social Ventures at Cambridge Judge Business School, was named Children’s Bookseller of the Year 2017 at the British Book Awards.

The bookstore, founded by Tamara Macfarlane in 2003, was cited for going “over and beyond the call of duty” for its customers. The judges said Tales on Moon Lane “punches way above its weight, with so much energy and passion.”

Located in the Herne Hill section of South London, the bookstore staged many events in 2016 including half-term reading festivals and coordination of the Southwark School Reading Festival. It also launched Can’t Put it Down, a website for self-published authors and independent publishers, as well as a Moon Lane Education portal for schools.

Tales on Moon Lane works with the literacy charity Beanstalk. With the support of Cambridge Social Ventures, part of the Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation at Cambridge Judge, the bookshop has created a social enterprise spinoff, Moon Lane Ink, to give students the opportunity to run pop-up bookshops in schools.

The venture also aims to promote diversity in book publishing by encouraging children from a wide range of backgrounds to consider a career in publishing.
