The Conversation: Electric cars are here – but we’ll still need fuel for a long time

An article co-authored by Dr David Reiner, University Senior Lecturer in Technology Policy at Cambridge Judge Business School, looks at electrification of cars and why this is might not be “a cure-all”. “Beyond all the enthusiasm surrounding electrification, currently light-duty passenger vehicles only comprise 50 per cent of total global demand for energy in the transportation sector compared to 28 per cent for heavy road vehicles, 10 per cent for air, nine percent for sea and two per cent for rail,” the article says. “Put simply, the current focus on electrifying passenger vehicles – though welcome – represents only part of the answer. For most other segments, fuels will be needed for the foreseeable future.”
