Companies are increasingly working with consumers to develop ways to reduce waste, according to a new article in Harvard Business Review co-authored by Khal Soufani of Cambridge Judge Business School.

“Conventional wisdom would seem to suggest that companies have no incentive to lengthen the life cycle of their products and reduce the revenue they would get from selling new goods,” says the article. “Yet, more and more businesses are thinking about how to reduce consumer waste.”

The article published on 7 June suggests several ways that companies interested in reducing waste can build relationships with customers that focus on recycling and restoring value to products. These include finding retail partners, creating incentives, starting with a trial programme that can be adapted, and building a culture of collective values with customers.
Khal Soufani is Senior Faculty in Management Practice, Director of the Executive MBA Programme, and Director of the Circular Economy Research Initiative at Cambridge Judge.

Focus-based leadership is the key to success at Chinese technology company Huawei, according to an article in the May-June issue of The European Business Review co-authored by David De Cremer, KPMG Professor of Management Studies at Cambridge Judge.

The article outlines how company founder Ren Zhengfei has long emphasised how it is “crucial to focus on one thing to ultimately become better,” so the company has made continuous investments in research and development to improve its products.

“Huawei has become the embodiment of the idea that hard work and determination need to go together with a focus on strategic priorities,” the article says. “Wasting too much energy on non-strategic pursuits only distracts and breeds puddles of diversity that will divert rather than guide.”

Lionel Paolella

Lionel Paolella

A research paper on “category stretching” co-authored by Lionel Paolella, University Lecturer in Strategy and Organisation at Cambridge Judge, has been selected as a winner of the Emerald Citations of Excellence Award for 2016 by Emerald Group Publishing.

The paper, published in the Journal of Management Studies, looked at how it’s possible in organisation theory to stretch the “straightjacket of scholarship on categories” in order to blend, span and stretch traditional categories.

The Emerald awards are given to highly cited papers relating to business management, finance, accounting, economics and marketing, and are based on such factors as novelty, inter-disciplinary interest and relevancy in today’s world.
